M.C. Miller's Integrated CIS and DCVG Survey Equipment
Dual probe operation requires
one red-handled and one green-handled data probe. For dual probe
operation, the red-handled cane is held in the left hand and the
green-handled cane is held in the right hand.
The number of data-probes required depends on the survey type:
CIS can be performed
using one or two data-probes, however, in terms of
current-interrupted CIS, the survey process is slower when only
one data-probe is in use, as the operator must have the probe in
contact with the soil for a complete interruption cycle after
triggering a voltage recording. On the other-hand, the CIS
process is more efficient with two data-probes in use, as at
least one data-probe is in contact with the soil at all times as
the operator walks down the length of the pipeline, and there is
no delay in recording On/Off voltages. Also, by using two
data-probes, voltage recordings can be triggered via the
push-button switch on one of the probes while the location of
survey flags (typically at 100 feet intervals) can be registered
via the push-button switch on the second data-probe.
DCVG Surveys require two data-probes (one red-handled,
the other green-handled), since these surveys involve measuring
the potential difference between two locations on the surface of
the soil above the pipe.
Combined DCVG/CIS Surveys, i.e., when DCVG and CIS data
are collected during one pass down the length of the pipeline,
also require two data-probes (one red-handled, the other
green-handled). In this case, our Switch Box Controller is also
required.
NOTE for old style Data-probes:
In cases where surveys are
being performed through thick brush that might
cause the data-probe to get caught up, it is recommended that a wire tie be used,
as illustrated in the above photograph, in order to minimize the strain on the cable
plug as the data-probe is pulled through the brush.
MC Miller now offers a data-probe retrofit/repair kit for use if your data-probe connector has been broken.
This kit can be installed in-house, or you can send your damaged probe to MC Miller for installation. Available for
both red and green handle probes. More information can be found here.

Continuous Read Data Probe
Continuous data output, with no need to press a button to take a reading.
Requires banana plug test lead to connect to meter (included).
Employs the same connector for use with replaceable electrodes as the SIN0156 and SIN0157 as shown above.
Requires RE-5C electrode, which is sold separately (Cat. #15210), or use one you already own.
Cat. #TRI014
Price $189.00
Data-probe cables are used to
connect our reference electrode data-probes to the voltmeter in
our data-loggers. When connected via a data-probe cable, the
color of the band on a data-probe cable indicates to which side
of the voltmeter the reference electrode will be connected.
If a black-band data-probe cable is used, the reference
electrode data-probe will be connected to the negative side of
the voltmeter. Such a data-probe cable will result in negative
pipe-to-soil readings when the positive side of the voltmeter is
connected to the pipe.
On the other-hand, if a red-band data-probe cable is used, the
reference electrode data-probe will be connected to the positive
side of the voltmeter. Such a data-probe cable will result in
positive pipe-to-soil readings when the negative side of the
voltmeter is connected to the pipe.
Black-band Cable (Cat. #12660)
Price $183.75
Red-band Cable (Cat. #12665)
Price $183.75
Switch Box Controller (Cat. #12555)
Price $1,260.00
The Switch Box Controller allows DCVG and CIS data to be collected on a
single pass down the length of the pipeline. Includes a cable
to connect the Switch Box with the G1 data-logger.
Gx Belt Pack (Cat. #11710)
Price $498.75
The Belt Pack is used to carry the
Gx data-logger at waist level, in a hands-free fashion, and it
has an integrated dual-probe adapter for use on both CIS and
DCVG surveys. The dual-probe adapter is used to connect the
data-probes to the Gx data-logger. The Hip Pack trail wire
dispenser is used in-conjunction with the Belt Pack for CIS.
(sold separately) mounted on Belt Pack.
Note: If a Backpack is purchased to carry trail wire for CIS, we
recommend the Belt Pack (in addition) for DCVG surveys, as the
Backpack is not required for DCVG surveys.

A trail wire dispenser is required for CIS and Combined DCVG/CIS surveys. It is
not required for DCVG surveys.
When a wire chainer and a counter unit are used in conjunction with a trail
wire dispenser system, an audible signal is generated every 2.5
feet (or every meter, in the case of the metric system) and the
operator triggers readings in response to the audible signal.
Alternatively, readings can be triggered automatically via a
trigger cable. Automatic triggering is not possible for Combined
DCVG/CIS surveys, as in this case the DCVG voltage is recorded
first (at each measurement location) and the CIS voltage
recordings are triggered internally by the data-logger itself.
